Seismology and Earthquake Engineering

The Qatar National Vision 2030 aims to create a sustainable economy and advance the standard of living of its people. Qatar planning and delivery is premised on the idea that generations to come should find more equitable place. In the near future, Qatar will host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as the first World Cup ever to be held in a Muslim Arab country. Hosting that amazing and historic event accelerates progress towards achieving national development goals and creates a lasting legacy for Qatar.

From this perspective and on the basis of the Qatar National Research Strategy, although historical documents have never mentioned any significant earthquakes within the State of Qatar, Qatar shows extensive interest for earthquakes studies to reduce their risks and to take advantage of their occurrence. Accordingly, the Qatar Meteorology Department (QMD) of Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) established the Qatar Seismic Network (QSN) in 2014 to constitute the first step towards the establishment of Qatar Seismic Information Center (QSIC) and started to do the required research and collaboration toward seismic risk management and mitigation.

To capitalize the experience toward improving the state-of-the-art technology in seismology and earthquake engineering, CAA will host and organize the Gulf Seismic Forum 2020 (GSF2020) during February 17 - 19, 2020. That forum will be the Eleventh (11th GSF2020) in a series of very successful conferences on “Seismology and Earthquake Engineering” which started in the Arabian Gulf region in 2004. This series provided an opportunity for scientists and engineers to present relevant results, propose potential collaborations, and identify areas requiring additional research. The combination of national and international expertise ensures that the program is highly technical with leading edge science brought together from around the world mixed with local knowledge from the region’s leading scientists.

The main goal of the 11th Gulf Seismic Forum (11th GSF2020) is to bring together the international experts in the fields of seismology and earthquake engineering, to capitalize their experience toward improving the state-of-the-art technologies in these fields and providing mitigation measures to reduce the human sufferings and material loss around world and the Arabian Gulf region in particular. 11th GSF2020 provides an opportunity for scientists and engineers from all over the world to meet and to discuss current research on a broad range of related subjects.

1. Seismic networks and Data processing.
2. Geodetic measurements and Crustal studies.
3. Seismotectonics and Seismic hazards.
4. Seismic risks and Earthquake engineering.
5. Disaster management: Earthquakes and Tsunamis.

Invitation to those interested
CAA is pleased to invite all who are interested to attend and participate. Papers on any of the listed topics and related to the Arabian Plate and surrounding regions are invited and welcomed. Participation by students and professionals in the early stages of their career is especially welcomed. Papers will be selected according to their relevance to the topics and the evaluation of the scientific committee members. Intending authors should submit an abstract of their papers in English language.

Forum Language
The forum language is English. Possible Arabic-English translation will be available at the starting ceremony.

Keynote Speakers
The forum keynote speakers will highlight the importance of the Forum's topics and focus on the latest researches and techniques in seismology and earthquake engineering. The following are the GSF2020 invited keynote speakers in alphabetical order:

The Forum is inclusive only of oral presentations and the number of presentations to be accepted will be limited to the time available of the planned Forum. Preference will be given to topics within the geographical region of the Arabian Peninsula and surroundings and relevant to the technical topics of the Forum. If time allows, papers dealing with Forum topics will be accepted. Please adhere to submission deadline.
